As part of the Plantation Place project, a new pedestrian route was created between the development’s two buildings. Plantation Lane is a reinvention of the traditional city alleyway into a striking piece of public art.

Arup Associates worked closely with the artist Simon Patterson in developing “Time and Tide”, a large glass screen along one side of Plantation Lane. The screen is a giant light box featuring close-up images of the surface of the Moon, which constantly change colour. The pavement features lettering, a “carpet of words,” related to the history of the site and the city. This is a bold and effective piece of architectural art, technically innovative and properly integrated into the context, a firm response to the “iconic” tendency.
